What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal Decompression Frisco TexasAre you suffering from chronic back pain? Have you been unable to find a treatment that suppresses that stubborn pain? Spinal decompression might be for you. However, like many people, you may not have heard of this procedure. That’s why our experts at Tieperman Health and Wellness are here to give you a rundown on the whole thing!

Non-surgical Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a form of motorized traction that relieves back pain. What does this mean? Essentially, the treatment gently stretches the spine to alleviate pressure on the vertebrae and disks. This can cause spinal disks to retract, which takes the pressure off of the nerves and other parts of your spine. This also helps water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids flow through to the spinal disks, promoting healing.

Some conditions this decompression helps treat are:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Bulging, degenerating, or herniating disks
  • Worn spinal joints
  • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots

How is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Done?

During the treatment, you are fully clothed. There will be a harness around your pelvis and your trunk. You might be face down or face up, and your doctor will control the treatment from a computer and cater it to your needs.

The procedure usually lasts from 30 to 45 minutes and is done 20 to 28 times over several weeks. You might also experience extra treatment before and after, such as electric stimulation, hot and cold therapy, or ultrasound therapy.

Who is Non-Surgical Decompression NOT For?

If you have any of the following conditions, nonsurgical spinal decompression might not be the treatment for you:

  • Pregnant
  • Any fractures
  • Tumor
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Advanced osteoporosis
  • Metal implants in the spine

Surgical Spinal Decompression

This treatment is usually used as a last resort for back pain because of how invasive it is. Your doctor might recommend it to you if you suffer from bulging or ruptured disks, bony growths, or other spinal problems. Surgery could be beneficial if your symptoms include numbness, pain, tingling, or weakness.

There are multiple different surgery options besides spinal decompression. It is best to consult your doctor and weigh the pros and cons to determine the right treatment for you.

Risks

As is with any surgery, there are certain risks involved with surgical spinal decompression. You may or may not experience complications such as:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia
  • Nerve or tissue damage

It is also possible that the surgery might not improve your back pain as much as you hoped. It’s difficult to determine who it will benefit and who it will not.
